CFD, what is it?

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD)  uses numerical analysis  to solve and analyze problems that involve fluid flows in specific environments.

The whole of the phenomena related to fluid movements is governed by a system of partial differential equations called “Navier-Stokes equations”, unsolved in a mathematical general way . There are, however, numerical methods for evaluating, in an approximate way, the value of their solutions at points defined in a given volume and under fixed conditions.

While it has become much more democratized in recent years, it can not, unlike the speech often held by software publishers, be used as black box tool. It is imperative to keep in mind that it remains a scientific tool and must therefore be considered with all the rigour required to achieve representative results of a physical reality.

Using CFD to compute the air flows around and within built structures, and even more specifically to the determination of wind loads, is particularly complex. It requires a deep knowledge of the physics of the phenomena  (thermal transfer, randomness and highly turbulent wind …), specific developments (wind generation, aeraulic/thermal coupling, dedicated postProcessing …) But also extremely important computing means (several days of computation on a cluster of several hundred cores are required for some simulation).

With an experience of more than 20 years, a strong knowledge of the physical phenomena to be studied and the mathematical methods to be used to reproduce them, a permanent scientific watch through participation in research programs,  OPTIFLOW is today  a recognized company for its expertise in the application of CFD for  architecture and urban areas.
